I wanted to like this book. I was intrigued with getting a look into the foster system in the U.K. and the premise of an 8 year old boy who looks like an angel, being helped by foster parents, drew me to the book. At first, I was all in, just as surprised as Casey by Spencer's transgressions. After all, she'd barely received any history on the boy. However, it started to become unbelievable. He kept doing horrible things and then acting innocent, and he'd basically get away with it! *Spoilers!"Beat up a neighbor kid or two? The only consequence is losing a few points so he couldn't go out the next day. Maybe. Unless he earned points in other ways, then he could still earn points to go outside and torment the little kids in his neighborhood yet again! Even if she stayed strictly within the points system, I couldn't fathom her letting Spencer play outside with neighborhood kids unsupervised. She was shocked, SHOCKED! every time Spencer would do some sociopathic thing to a neighbor kid. If I had a kid like that, I'd never let him outside to play unsupervised by me or my husband, but she let him out for one hour and he had free rein to go wherever he wanted. Casey had no problem letting him go a block away to hang out with a kid he'd already been in trouble with. *smh*The things he did were described as something a psychopath would do. He'd torment or even kill animals and it was basically waved off by the end of the book. He nearly drowned a little girl in a pool, and still, he got the benefit of the doubt. Eh, I just don't think it fits.
