I decided to buy and read this book first rather than its prequel (Working Class Boy) because I’ve been a fan of the man and the band for many years and I was interested to read the stories of the Cold Chisel days as well as Jimmy’s transition to a great solo career. As much as a book, this is a conversation (albeit a one-sided one) Jimmy has with his fans. The book is a great read - both in terms of learning about how he struggled with his inner demons and also about the background to his records and some of his best known songs.Jimmy has an engaging writing style - he writes is if he's having a conversation with his audience (the readers) so the style is informal and at times repetitive. I am not an author but I know that before he started writing he knew he would have to be brutally honest in recounting the stories of his life - an easy thing to say but a harder thing to do, I’m sure. He’d have to remember a lot of stuff and he does a great job of recounting details, large and small, that provide color and context to his career - no small feat given he was in an alcohol/drug-induced haze for much of the time. Also, he would have to dredge up painful and embarrassing memories - never an easy thing to do.What did I take away from his life story. Firstly, Jimmy saw the abyss, in fact he had one foot over the edge about to fall in, but he found a way to step back and take control of his life. Secondly, he married a good woman and has a great family that has been pretty important to his life and career. Thirdly, although Jimmy came from an underprivileged background with a harsh and violent family life, he had a gift; it just took him a while to figure out how to best use it. Lastly, while Jimmy has found fame and fortune, at his core he’s still just a kid from Adelaide (via Glasgow) and a working class man.
